Chapter Twenty-Five

“He found me the next day, threatened my stepsisters until I came out and gave myself up. He cut poor Gisella’s heel off to fit it into the glass slipper in an attempt to force her to talk, a claim that he would take her if I didn’t reveal myself, if they didn’t reveal the woman the townspeople had claimed lived there. When I came out, the look in his eyes. . .” I frown. “It’s not a memory I like to keep.”

Crow studies me carefully. He’s been quiet mostly during the talk, watching the words tumble from my mouth as I described what happened.

“You’re married?”

I shake my head. “No. There’s a loophole, kind of. The spell in the ceremony said I’d belong to him in life. It never mentioned death. Plus, we never consummated the marriage though I was still given the title.”

His brows raise. “First, the thought that your marriage ceremonies have spells to tie you together is far more primitive than anything I’ve ever heard. Second, the blood on your dagger—”

“Was his,” I nod. “The people who I’m running from, they’re after me because I killed the crown prince when he tried to rape me on our wedding night. I climbed down the trellis and ran as fast as I could, somehow falling into your realm.”

It’s Crow’s turn to shake his head, his eyes fierce. “And here I was underestimating you. But none of that explains how you could do what you did.”

I throw up my hands in confusion. “Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe it’s the curse. Maybe something else. Either way, I’m just the daughter of a merchant—”

“Who was your mother?” he asks suddenly, staring at me intently.

I snap my mouth shut. “I beg your pardon?”

“Your mother. Who was she?”

For a moment, I consider not answering. Instead, I sigh and admit, “I don’t really know. I once saw a picture of her, but I lost it when my father died. I don’t even know her name, let alone who she could have been.”

He nods. “Perhaps your mother was something more, and that is why you are the way you are.”

“That seems rather preposterous. I’ve never had any powers before.”

“Until now,” Crow adds, nodding his head. “You have something now. Whether it was dormant your entire life or it’s something new, you have powers of some sort. And I’m interested in finding out what.”

“So you can use me?” I ask, narrowing my eyes.

“Princess, if I’m going to use you, you’ll like it. Trust me.” But before he can tease me some more or make the scowl on my face stronger, a paper appears on the table before him, a large heart motif on top of it. At the interruption, he scowls. “Fuck,” he growls. “This better be good.”

The paper that appears in front of him, a physical projection of whatever message he gets, has him huffing in annoyance as he reads over it. “I’m afraid we’ll have to table this conversation until later. I have need to take my leave.
